Redefining Wealth Management

Andy's Story

My career in the financial services industry began in 2001, but my interest in the stock market and wealth management started well before that. As a young child, I witnessed my grandmother’s ability to remain financially stable after my grandfather passed away – which was mainly due to her decision to invest all her life. Every Christmas, my grandmother would also gift her grandchildren shares of stock, and as I watched the money grow, I gained a new appreciation for what investing can genuinely do for you.  This opportunity to see the tangible effects of strategic investing and multigenerational planning inspired me to pursue a career in financial services.

After I graduated from the University of Washington, my father – a stockbroker himself – encouraged me first to branch out so I could learn the nuances of business from positions in other industries. Following his advice, my first position was at Willamette Industries, a forest products company, in their management training program. It was a perfect position for a recent college graduate because I learned all the fundamentals of running a business. I was quickly promoted to managing their Northern California territory. This role came with many opportunities, and I enjoyed interacting with customers in the field. Silicon Valley was booming during this time, and I was soon recruited to work in sales for a high-tech startup. It was exciting to be in the startup tech sector at this time.   Working at an innovative startup scaling quickly was an excellent learning experience.  I also gained excellent experience while navigating the complexities of enterprise sales. This enterprise sales experience positioned me to become an account manager at Cisco Systems. Cisco Systems was at the pinnacle of the high-tech industry. Working for an industry leader, I learned a lot of business best practices that I still use today.

Before I knew it, ten years had passed, and my father encouraged me to return to Portland and join his team. My true passion and interest remained in wealth management and financial services, so it was a good time to move back and pursue this interest. I was immediately happy with my decision, as I enjoyed helping clients from the start. Working with my father and his team allowed me to understand all that wealth management entails. I enjoyed working on investment strategies for our clients to enable them to reach their financial goals.  In 2005, after four years of being on his team, my Dad was confident in my abilities to take over his practice and ready to retire. Nine years later,  we were acquired by Baird, which benefited my clients because of the breadth of resources Baird offers. By joining Baird, I can provide my clients with a complete wealth management solution.  Five years after the acquisition, along with managing my practice, I became the Branch Manager of the Portland office.

Every experience throughout my career has taught me something I can apply to my practice today. Plus, I’m happy to have watched the industry my father thrived in transition from solely picking stocks to creating a comprehensive wealth management experience for all clients.
